Montana fishing report
Philipsburg, Montana’s finest fly fishing shop
At Blackfoot River Outfitters, we don’t hire guides based simply by their Montana fishing experience - but rather their life experience.

Your time on the water is valuable. Too valuable to waste on a guide who thinks your trip is about them instead of you. Our guides will put you on fish, improve your angling skills and increase your fly fishing knowledge. Just as importantly, they enjoy sharing a good story, lay out an exceptional lunch spread and generally make fine company. Some of our guides have fished the world over, others grew up in Montana and find it hard to fish elsewhere. We have guides in their 50’s and others in their 20’s. They are students and parents, Easterners and Westerners, musicians and mechanics. All are special and go about the art of guiding in different ways – and all are hired to make the most of your time on the water.

Through the years, several of BRO’s best guides have their roots in the South. We think that Southern upbringing fosters a deep respect for others, a calm but convincing demeanor, and true appreciation of the West. David Morris embodies these distinguished qualities and is a classic example of why we hire Southern born guides.

For as long as he can remember, David has been chasing a variety of saltwater fish on the intercoastal waterways near his home in Chapel Hill, NC. Although his father coached him in saltwater fly-fishing, it took a couple years of boarding school in the foothills of Virginia to convert him into a trout addict.

David transferred to UM in the late 90s earning a Bachelor of Science in political science. Following three years as a “political operative” (you’ll have to ask him what that is), he began sharing his appreciation for fly-fishing as a guide on Western Montana’s rivers in the summer and running a partner’s tax office in North Carolina during the off season. Early on, David was taught that if you find a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. Spend a day with David and you’ll agree that he lives that theme.
