Montana fishing report
Philipsburg, Montana’s finest fly fishing shop
At Blackfoot River Outfitters, we don’t hire guides based simply by their Montana fishing experience - but rather their life experience.

Your time on the water is valuable. Too valuable to waste on a guide who thinks your trip is about them instead of you. Our guides will put you on fish, improve your angling skills and increase your fly fishing knowledge. Just as importantly, they enjoy sharing a good story, lay out an exceptional lunch spread and generally make fine company. Some of our guides have fished the world over, others grew up in Montana and find it hard to fish elsewhere. We have guides in their 50’s and others in their 20’s. They are students and parents, Easterners and Westerners, musicians and mechanics. All are special and go about the art of guiding in different ways – and all are hired to make the most of your time on the water.

Guiding and fishing the waters of his youth is a dream come true for Adam Spenner. As a Missoula native, Adam began fishing the local area as soon as he was big enough to hold a fly rod. Learning to fly fish in Western Montana meant covering the full range of fishing opportunities that the region offers. Multi-day backpacking trips into the high alpine lakes of the Montana backcountry, float tubing the windswept waters of the Blackfeet Reservation and floating and wading the local rivers were all part of his adolescence.

Adam is not just purely a “trout bum”. He works in the off season for a local eBay and website business when he’s not in search of fresh powder to ski. Prior to receiving his degree in Spanish at University of Montana he was fortunate enough to spend six months in Chile and was able to fish some of the famous waters of southern Patagonia. He has also traveled to South Africa and Zambia in pursuit of tiger fish on the Zambezi.

Adam’s interests beyond fly fishing cover the full range of outdoor pursuits available in the region and throughout the world. From hunting big game and waterfowl at home to downhill skiing, fishing and whitewater rafting all over North and South America, Adam truly loves the outdoors. His wide range of experiences, knowledge of the local waters and his easy going, positive and patient style will help to make your day on the water an enjoyable experience.
